I received the Luma & Chroma RCA style plugs (male) to single RCA video plug (male) and realized I'm kind of an idiot. The cable is like 4 inches long. So if I'd been paying attention, I would have picked Luma & Chroma RCA style plugs (male) to a single RCA video plug (female) so i could have used any length RCA video cable to put the monitor anywhere. I didn't pay attention though, so last night I had to put the monitor RIGHT on top of the IIGS for my test. Nevertheless, I tried it last night and it works. It looks pretty bad, but I can't tell (yet) if that is a function of the RCA video output of the IIGS or just to be expected (i.e. I'm used to VGA displays that look spectacular off modern PC's).
It gives me something to work with until the Apple IIGS monitor arrives. The hard drive on this IIGS is partitioned and appears to have data files for Appleworks, but when I tried to run them it said Appleworks was missing. I tried to run Printshop and it said I had to have a 3.5" disk attached. Thankfully I have one of those, so tonight I'll attach the 5.25" and 3.5" drives to the IIGS and see how it works.
I didn't see any games, so I suspect this was a business/work/school oriented computer. I have found no evidence at all of the previous owner. Nothing seems personalized, either on the computer itself or in the many manuals and books that came with it.
Looking in the boxes that came with the system, I see there's an extra power supply. I have no idea if it is working or not, but it looks unused, so I suspect it was purchased as an "in case" kind of deal. Which is nice!
The ADB keyboard and mouse that came with the system are horrible. Just horrible. It's that original "square" Apple ADB mouse and it's grimy. Bleah. The keyboard is the "small" one. By which I mean it's the ADB keyboard that has no "edges." I know that's not very clear but there's a NICE ADB keyboard out there that Apple made in the late 80's and early 90's, full size with a full row of macro type keys above it and edges. This one is just the keys of the keyboard with no extra plastic at all around the edges. At least it is cleaner than the mouse.
I have an ADB Kensington Trackball, also picked up from Freecycle. I intend to swap that in for the mouse. It is unused, which should be nice. Plus, the old ADB mouse requires a mousepad for effective use (it is not the more modern laser type mouse, it's got the mechanical parts, the big ball in the center of it).
More on this project as it progresses!
